DESCRIPTION:Dr. Chris Chapman has been our music director since 2015. This past summer he accepted a position as director of bands at Central Michigan University. Congrats\, Chris! \nThat also means we need a new artistic director and conductor. \nWe held interviews over the summer and accepted five conductors to conduct one concert each as part of our audition process to replace Dr. Chapman. \nFirst up is Dr. Joseph Accuardi-Gilliam! Joe is Associate Principal at Hudson’s Bay High School and Artistic Director/Conductor of Rose City Pride Bands. Cumpston was a percussionist and music educator in the Portland area who was killed in an accident while traveling in Africa.

SUMMARY:Spring Wind Symphony Show
DESCRIPTION:Is it a show or a concert or a performance? I choose ‘show’ for the alliterative affect. \nNo matter what you call it\, you’ll hear great classical and contemporary wind band literature. It’s a treat for the whole family. \nOne of my favorite works is a 2014 composition by David Biedenbender\, Daybreak Crossing. Oh\, wait! Paris Sketches\, a four movement work by Martin Ellerby is another favorite. It was composed in 1994. \nThen there’s the Intermezzo from Guglielmo Ratcliff composed by Pietro Mascagni and transcribed for band by Tad Suzuki. That’s a pretty little melodic interlude. \nWe’re also performing Camille Saint-Saëns’ Occident and Orient\, opus 25 which Loras John Schissel arranged in 2005 for modern wind band. \nSomething for everyone!

Experiencing live music in the fine arts is totally elusive to the growing number of people  in our society on the autism spectrum. This is not okay.  – – – The Musical Artist \nSensory Friendly means: \n\nlights up inside the performance hall\nlower volume and consistent sound level\naudience members are free to talk and leave their seat\nprops such as scarves are provided\naudience members are welcome to bring and use headphones\n\nThe Marylhurst Music Therapy Student Organization will provide special activities before\, during and after the show. \nMusic includes classic wind symphony repertoire\, trumpet fanfares\, tunes from Mary Poppins\, Peter and The Wolf\, and music from Star Wars.
