SUMMARY:Shambhala Spring Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:I feel excited and honored to be playing at Portland Shambhala’s annual Spring Arts Festival. \nThis year\, they are doing things a little differently than in past years. From the website: \nFirst\, we’ll curate a collection of visual art from images and poems submitted by the community.  Then\, flower artists will create arrangements in response to pieces they choose from the curated show.  Finally\, at the reception\, performance artists will offer poems\, songs\, and dances to art arrangements that inspire them. \nI’ll be one of the performers who will offer improvised music inspired by one of the art arrangements. I love this whole idea and am really looking forward to it. \nThe public is welcome to attend. So drop in! You may also register at the Portland Shambhala website.

SUMMARY:Lady Be Good: Instrumental Women in Jazz
DESCRIPTION:The International Sweethearts of Rhythm. The Syncoettes. Carol Kaye. The substantial contributions of woman to jazz music have been largely ignored by history\, but their significant role is one that can no longer be denied. LADY BE GOOD reveals the lost stories of female jazz musicians from the early 1920s to the 1970s. Ray’s proud film charts the influence of female players from the struggles and successes of early innovators (Sweet Emma Barrett\, Lil Hardin- Armstrong)\, through the rise of the all-woman big bands (Ina Ray Hutton & Her Melodears\, the Hollywood Redheads)\, to the female musicians that were instrumental players (Dorothy Donegan\, Mary Osborne) and arrangers (Mary Lou Williams\, Melba Liston) for more famous male band leaders\, including Benny Goodman and Quincy Jones. (80 mins.) \nDirector Kay Ray in attendance.\nSponsored by KMHD
