A Rooftop Violinist, A Trick Pony, The Beatles

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]What do these three have in common? I’ll give you a hint. They all refer to songs with the word SUN in the title.

This summer SERI has a theme: songs that have SUN in the title. SERI is Small Ensemble Reading Intensive, a 5-day workshop held July 22-26 and Aug 5-9.

Between 3 and 6 saxophone and clarinet players gather in my studio Monday through Friday, 10am to 12:30pm and play quartet music.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Many Genres

  • Bohemian Rhapsody
  • Mission Impossible
  • Mamma Mia
  • City of Stars from La-La Land
  • Remember Me from Coco
  • Finlandia
  • Beethoven Symphony #7, movement II
  • Stompin’ At The Savoy

The workshop runs for two and a half hours each day, Monday through Friday. This is part of what makes it an intensive experience.

You get all the music on day one. At the end of the week, the group performs all the music in a casual concert with families and friends in attendance. Weather permitting, you’ll perform outside in the courtyard outside my studio. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Back to my original question: How are a rooftop violinist, a trick horse at Barnum & Bailey’s circus, and The Beatles connected?

As I mentioned earlier, all the songs that we will be playing in Summer SERI have the word SUN in the title. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Can You Guess?

A rooftop violinist is another way to say a Fiddler on The Roof. This musical by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick contains the poignant song, Sunrise, Sunset.

This Beatles song with SUN in the title was written by George Harrison. Here Comes The Sun, do-do-do-doo.

The song about a trick horse is not as well known by the general public. Kentucky Sunrise is the name of a trick horse in Barnum & Bailey’s circus and a ragtime march written by Karl King one hundred years ago about said horse. [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/9kQRtj2cKog” title=”Kentucky Sunrise”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]
